Maltitol is a common ingredient in "sugar-free snacks", and although it’s technically not sugar, it raises your blood glucose levels in pretty much the same way!
The glycemic index of maltitol (syrup) is 52, while sugar is 62, which is pretty much the same!! This right here is how eating a sugar-free candy with maltitol raised my blood sugar:

I find this to be extremely misleading. Sure, these snacks containing maltitol don’t contain sugar… but I’m pretty sure you would expect it to not contain anything that does pretty much the same thing, right?! Right.
The good news is that there’s plenty of sugar free snacks out there using zero glycemic sweeteners like monk fruit and allulose. Just make sure to check the labels and stay away from maltitol.
